UNM Introduces new STEM courses KRQE

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- The University of New Mexico has been making a big push to get young students interested in fields related to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) classes.
UNM is introducing a new course called Computer Science For All.
This idea for this class is to introduce STEM classes to those who may not have had any interest, but can now possible find that they have a lot of potential in these fields.
Currently 500 high school students are enrolled and are receiving college credit.
One of the research programs is working with robots. These robots are known as iAnts, which are controlled by an iPod and mimic ant behavior.
Ants are fascinating creatures that have cooperative behavior. Researchers would like students to learn from scientific observation and study of their patterns.
The iAnts have grippers on the bottom of the device to pick up items which are on the floor and are programmed to take them back to their nest.
In the future, iAnts are hoped to be a part of the community by doing programmed tasks such as picking up trash.
