Admissions Criteria
Entering freshmen and others not satisfying the admission criteria must first enter the School of Engineering (typical for entering freshman), enroll in nondegree status (typical of students working toward a second degree), or enter another degree granting unit of the university for which they meet the entrance requirements (typically Arts and Sciences).
Students denied entrance to the department due to lack of sufficient credits or specific courses may enroll in computer science classes and reapply at a later time when they meet the entrance requirements. Students who feel they require an exception to the normal admission criteria should consult an undergraduate advisor in the Computer Science Department.
Admissions Procedure and Forms
If you have not yet chosen the University of New Mexico, and would like a color brochure and application information sent to you via regular mail, fill out our handy brochure request.
All students, whether admitted to the department or not, are invited to contact an Undergraduate Advisor in the department for information about the Computer Science curriculum and guidance in course selection.
New Students
If you are not yet a student (i.e. an incoming freshman), and have not yet been admitted to UNM, please go to UNM’s Admissions and follow their admissions procedures. Students wishing to enroll in the bachelor’s program in computer science must specify in their University application that they wish to apply for admission to the Computer Science Department, School of Engineering.
You can also apply online.
International Students
If you are not yet a student (i.e. an incoming freshman), and have not yet been admitted to UNM, please go to UNM’s International Student Admissions, download the admissions form (at the bottom of the document) and follow their admissions procedures. Students wishing to enroll in the bachelor’s program in computer science must specify on their application that they wish to apply for admission to the Computer Science Department, in the School of Engineering.
Current UNM Students wishing to transfer into Computer Science
If you are a current student at UNM and wish to transfer into Computer Science from a non-engineering major, you must transfer into the School of Engineering.
Students transferring to the Computer Science Department from another college at UNM should initiate the paperwork at the Computer Science Department. Students transferring to the Computer Science Department from another department within the School of Engineering should initiate the paperwork in their present department office.
Students at other universities looking to transfer into Computer Science at UNM
Students wishing to enroll in the bachelor’s program in computer science must meet UNM’s transfer criteria, and must apply to UNM for transfer to the Computer Science Department, School of Engineering.
Students wishing to enter the Computer Science program and having university level credit for course work completed at another institution will have their transfer credits evaluated on an individual basis. Grades earned in equivalent courses at other institutions will be used in determining eligibility for admission to the department.
