Getting Started

After getting an CS account

You will get a new email and storage account with CS, which is different from your UNM NetID username and password.

On the third floor of Farris, there is a computer lab in room 309, just to the right of the elevator. It has a HP LaserJet, at queue name fec309 and a color LaserJet at fec309c.

There is also a poster printer that prints at a massive 42 inches wide. Talk to the systems folks first so they can give you the right settings and queue name—some of the defaults can be non-intuitive. It’s located in the Systems room, FEC 307, just to the right of the elevator as you exit.

For more information and printers, check out the Printer page.

Working Remotely

There are three groups of computers which you can log on (ssh) into remotely. They are: shuttle.cs.unm.edu, moons.cs.unm.edu, gigs.cs.unm.edu

For Windows, use putty to connect to these systems: Linux and Mac OS X have ssh built in to the command line.

You can also use Subversion remotely if you have configured it.

Wireless networks

The CS Department runs a wireless network on the 1st and 3rd floor of FEC called UNMWIRELESS. Once your laptop connects to the network, open up a web browser and you will be automatically forwarded to the login page so you may authenticate to the network.

You will need a UNM NetID username and password to use the wireless network.

Mail

Computer Science mail supports SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 in secure mode only. If you will be reading mail on more than one computer, IMAP is recommend.

Mail server: mail.cs.unm.edu

You can use any email client to access your CS email. One exception here is we have had some problems with Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook You can refer to the email setup page for more details on how to set up your email to be checked and sent securely.
